Ten and a half years ago, I tied my first white belt, not knowing just how much karate would shape who I am today. What started as something new and exciting quickly became one of the most meaningful parts of my life. Over the years, I’ve learned that karate isn’t just about forms or sparring — it’s about perseverance, respect, balance, and finding strength even when things get tough.
Earning my black belt has been ten years in the making. Along the way, I’ve had to learn how to balance a lot — being Head Drum Major for my high school marching band, playing varsity tennis, teaching karate, and keeping up with my classes while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. There were times it felt impossible to keep up with everything, but karate taught me discipline, time management, and the importance of never giving up, even when I was tired or overwhelmed.
Some days I came straight from band practice or a tennis match to the dojo, exhausted but determined. Other days, I taught younger students — and seeing their progress reminded me why I fell in love with karate in the first place. Watching them grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.
When I finally earned my black belt, I felt a profound sense of pride, gratitude, and reflection. It’s not just a piece of cloth — it represents ten years of hard work, of learning, of falling and getting back up. It’s a reminder of every challenge I overcame, every lesson I learned, and every person who encouraged me along the way.
This black belt is a milestone, yes, but it’s also a reminder: growth takes time, dedication, and heart. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I carry forward not just the skills of karate, but the values and memories that have shaped me into the person I am today.
